Absorb’s reporting engine is deservedly praised — dashboards, scheduled reports, BI connections. Everything it reports, though, derives from activity: enrolments, completions, scores at course end, time spent. Polish that machinery to any sheen and it still cannot say whether the compliance training survived until the audit, or the onboarding survived until the job.

The boundary isn’t a missing feature — it’s the category’s data model. Measuring memory requires practice events at delay, decay models per person, verification machinery: a different engine, not a better report. Evaluate accordingly: if activity answers your questions, Absorb answers them well; if memory is the question, you’re shopping across the boundary.

A category boundary, not a feature gap

Absorb’s reporting is good at what it reports

Dashboards, scheduled reports, BI connections and a genuinely strong admin experience. Within the activity domain, it is among the better executions in the category, and polish there is not nothing.

The limitation is not craftsmanship. Everything it reports derives from activity events, because that is what an LMS data model records.

Why better reports cannot cross the boundary

Measuring memory needs practice events at known delays, a decay model per person, and verification at depth. None of those exist in an activity data model, so no amount of reporting sophistication produces a retention curve — the underlying events were never captured.

This is why the honest framing is category rather than vendor. Any activity-first platform hits the same wall, however well built.

Sorting your questions before you shop

Write down the training questions your current reports cannot answer. Sort them into workflow questions and outcome questions. Workflow questions have excellent answers inside the LMS category, and buying across the boundary for them is waste.

Outcome questions do not, and no evaluation of activity platforms will surface that — which is exactly how organisations end up switching twice.
