What is microlearning?
Microlearning delivers learning in short, focused units — typically a few minutes, targeting a single objective. The format is well-defined; the claims made for it often aren’t. Here’s what brevity actually buys, what does the real work, and how to tell the two apart in a vendor demo.
The format fallacy, and what’s underneath it
The strong microlearning claim — short content produces better retention than long content — doesn’t survive the literature. What survives is more interesting: short units make it practical to distribute learning over time (spacing) and to make each unit an act of recall (retrieval), and those two mechanisms have enormous, well-replicated effects. Brevity is the enabler; spacing and retrieval are the engine.
The distinction matters commercially, because it separates two products that look identical in a catalogue. A platform that chops courses into two-minute videos has the format and none of the mechanism. A platform that schedules short retrieval against each learner’s forgetting curve has the mechanism, and the format follows from it. Ask which one you’re being sold.
What the evidence does support
Distributed practice beats massed practice; retrieval beats re-exposure; short sessions sustain adherence where hour-long modules don’t. All three favour a microlearning-shaped delivery — for reasons that aren’t about length.
Where the format struggles
Complex procedural learning and material needing sustained reasoning don’t decompose neatly into two-minute units. Microlearning maintains such material well; it teaches it poorly on its own.

Is microlearning better than traditional training?
Better at maintenance and adherence; not inherently better at initial teaching. The productive framing is complementary: conventional instruction introduces, microlearning consolidates and sustains.
How short should a unit be?
Short enough to complete in a genuine gap in the workday — for most workforces, under ten minutes. Below about two minutes you start paying more in context-switching than you gain.
Does microlearning work for compliance training?
Unusually well — compliance material is mostly rules and judgments, which decompose cleanly and decay badly. Short scheduled retrieval is close to an ideal fit.
What’s the biggest microlearning implementation mistake?
Chopping existing courses into clips and changing nothing else. Without spacing and retrieval you’ve made the same content more convenient to forget.
Is microlearning just a fad?
The label may fade; the mechanisms underneath it — spacing, retrieval, distributed practice — are among the most durable findings in learning science. Buy the mechanism, not the label.
