What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition is a learning technique where material is reviewed at increasing intervals, each review timed to land just before the memory would fade. Retrieving a memory at that near-forgotten moment strengthens it far more than reviewing it while fresh — which is why spacing beats cramming in essentially every study that has compared them.

How it works, and why the timing is everything

Memory decays on a curve: steep at first, flattening with time. Each successful retrieval resets the curve shallower — the memory becomes more durable, and the next review can wait longer. Spaced repetition is simply the discipline of surfing that curve: review at the moment of near-forgetting, when retrieval is effortful, because the effort is the mechanism. Review too early and it’s easy but useless; too late and the memory is gone.

Algorithms automate the surfing. From the Leitner box through SM-2 to modern per-learner models, the job is the same: estimate each item’s decay for each person and schedule the next retrieval just inside the danger line. The estimates improve with data — a system watching thousands of retrievals learns how fast you forget which kinds of things, and times accordingly.

Is spaced repetition the same as spaced practice?

Spaced practice is the general principle — distribute learning over time. Spaced repetition is its engineered form: explicit review events, scheduled per item, usually by an algorithm. All spaced repetition is spaced practice; not vice versa.

What intervals should reviews use?

There’s no universal schedule — the right gap depends on the item, the person and their history, which is why algorithms beat fixed rules. The pattern is always expanding: successful recalls earn longer gaps.

Does spaced repetition work for complex skills?

It directly strengthens the declarative layer — facts, rules, procedures, distinctions. Complex skill rides on that layer; effective systems space increasingly applied questions so practice climbs from recall toward judgment.

Why does cramming feel like it works?

Because it does — for tomorrow. Massed practice wins the immediate test and loses every delayed one; the fluency you feel while cramming is precisely the low-effort exposure that doesn’t build durable memory.
