What is spaced repetition?
Spaced repetition is a learning technique where material is reviewed at increasing intervals, each review timed to land just before the memory would fade. Retrieving a memory at that near-forgotten moment strengthens it far more than reviewing it while fresh — which is why spacing beats cramming in essentially every study that has compared them.
How it works, and why the timing is everything
Memory decays on a curve: steep at first, flattening with time. Each successful retrieval resets the curve shallower — the memory becomes more durable, and the next review can wait longer. Spaced repetition is simply the discipline of surfing that curve: review at the moment of near-forgetting, when retrieval is effortful, because the effort is the mechanism. Review too early and it’s easy but useless; too late and the memory is gone.
Algorithms automate the surfing. From the Leitner box through SM-2 to modern per-learner models, the job is the same: estimate each item’s decay for each person and schedule the next retrieval just inside the danger line. The estimates improve with data — a system watching thousands of retrievals learns how fast you forget which kinds of things, and times accordingly.

Spacing compounds with the testing effect: actively recalling strengthens memory in a way re-exposure doesn’t. Effective systems always space retrieval — a question answered from memory — never just re-display.
