What is blended learning?
Blended learning combines live instruction — classroom or virtual — with self-paced digital learning. The definition is simple; the outcomes vary enormously, because ‘blended’ describes what’s in the mix rather than how the parts are designed to work together.
The design questions that decide a blend
Three choices determine whether a blend works. First, which mode does which job — live time is expensive and should buy what only live time can (discussion, practice with feedback, hard questions), while self-paced should carry transmission. Blends that invert this — lectures live, discussion asynchronous — waste their most costly ingredient. Second, sequencing: flipped designs (self-paced first, live for application) outperform lecture-then-homework in most comparisons.
Third, and most often skipped: what happens after. Both modes deliver exposure, and exposure decays identically whether it arrived through a screen or a room. A blend without a consolidation layer is two delivery mechanisms sharing one forgetting curve — which is why ‘we went blended’ so often fails to move outcomes.
What live time is uniquely good for
Questions, discussion, practice with immediate human feedback, and the social contract of showing up. Use it for those and the economics justify themselves.
What self-paced is uniquely good for
Transmission at each learner’s pace, repeatable reference, and reaching people the calendar can’t assemble. Both modes have honest comparative advantages.

How do we stop the self-paced part being skipped?
Design live sessions that are unusable without it, and measure the pre-work rather than assuming it. Verification before the live session solves this cleanly.
Does blended reduce training cost?
Usually yes on delivery, but that’s the wrong headline — the cost that matters is per unit of retained capability, and that depends on the consolidation layer more than the blend.
